The Pathway to a Decarbonized Power System

Decarbonizing the electricity grid is a vital and urgent step in tackling the climate crisis. The 14th Annual Duke Energy Conference will explore the opportunities and challenges on the pathway to sustainable and equitable grid decarbonization. Industry experts across the value chain will discuss modernizing the electricity grid, innovating carbon-free technology solutions, and financing the energy transition.

Keynote Speakers

Danielle W. Merfeld, Ph.D.

Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, GE Renewable Energy

As Chief Technology Officer of GE Renewable Energy, Danielle leads technical efforts to develop differentiated products and services across the broadest renewable energy and grid portfolio in the industry. She also champions sustainability efforts across the business and is on the leadership team for the GE Women’s Network. She was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2021.

Danielle received her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University. She serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of Notre Dame and on the advisory board of Texas A&M University’s Smart Grid Center. Danielle is also an Ambassador to the Equality in Energy Transitions initiative representing the United States. She serves on the Export Import Bank of the United States Council on Climate, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering’s President’s Business Advisory Committee and is on the National Science Foundation’s Engineering Advisory Council.

Audrey Zibelman

CEO, Government Leader and Energy Transition Advisor

Audrey Zibelman is an experienced energy industry executive who has led the decarbonization of the power industry as an entrepreneur, CEO, and government leader.

She is a member of President Biden’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council and holds non-executive board and advisory positions with the Pollination Group, Meridian, X, Alphabet’s moonshot factory; home energy appliance maker SPAN; Rocky Mountain Institute; battery manufacturer EOS Energy; Australian renewable energy developer Squadron Energy; Advanced Energy Economy

Audrey was previously General Manager of Tapestry, X’s moonshot for the electric grid where she led the project’s efforts to accelerate power system decarbonization through the development of highly accurate digital models of the grid.

Before joining X, Audrey was the Managing Director and CEO of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), the national power system and gas system operator for Australia.

Audrey was previously the Chair of the New York Public Service Commission where she was a member of the Governor’s cabinet and regulated the electric, gas, water, steam, and communication utilities in New York. Audrey started her career as legal counsel to the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission having gained her Doctorate of Law from Mitchell Hamline School in Minnesota.
